                        China Project Hope

In January of 1998, North American Chinese Educational foundation (NACEF) along with Chinese Youth Development Foundation(CYDF) and Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Stanford (ACSSS) launched the Event: China Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America. CYDF’s China Project Hope is the most influential public event in China in the l990s. In the past ten years, Project Hope, a name known by almost every household in China and by most overseas Chinese, has received donations totaling over US$200 million. The fund raised has supported over 2 million Chinese primary school dropouts to return to school and has built over 7,000 hope schools in China. The Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America ‘98 & ‘99 has been joined by Chinese student associations in 33 universities like Harvard, MIT, Columbia, UC Berkeley, CalTech, and Toronto, and by a couple of Chinese community organizations like North American Chinese Network and Southwest China Association as chief-coorganizers and cosponsors. The objective of China Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America ‘98 & ‘99 is to motivate and unite organizations and individuals who are concerned about the educational development of China. This project seeks to sponsor the return to school of millions of children who were forced to drop out because of sheer poverty.

Fund Raising in North America is the first time China Project Hope has been publicly staged in North America. Envisioned and planned by Chinese students studying abroad at the most prestigious universities in United States, this event possesses great significance. It shows that the overseas Chinese’s wish to support their country by showing a united front. We want to help to actualize the plan to educate the Chinese youth and to further the technological advancement of China.

The first donor to the event is Professor Steve Chu, winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for physics. Professor Chu made the donation after he heard of the event in early Jan. He said he would be happy to do something for the poor Chinese school dropouts. He urged more people to join our efforts. The Fund Raising in North America ‘98 & ‘99 has caught a great attention among public, so far the project have received funds which was used to support 320 dropouts back to schools.

NACEF’s Biomedical Youth Science Program

Most scientists believe the impact of science on society - of new scientific discoveries, new understandings, new applications of science to health, medicine and technology - will be greater in the 21st century than in the 20th.

Today’s students will face future challenge in a world that increasingly demands its citizens be scientifically literate. In the coming decades, science literacy may well be the defining factor for our success as individuals and as a nation. Indeed, the United States' global competitiveness rests firmly on its ability to educate a workforce capable of generating and coping with rapid technological changes, but most of scientist, school principals, teachers, human resource directors and student parents believe that science education needs greater emphasis than it is presently given, they strongly endorse a quality hands-on, inquiry-based science education and value a critical-thinking, problem-solving and team working skills it would engender in students. Today's students are the ones who will be making, using and benefiting from the new scientific advances, so it's up to us to ensure that they're getting the best, most meaningful science education possible.

North America Chinese Educational Foundation (NACEF) initiate a Biomedical Youth Science program based on one key philosophy-a hands-on, inquiry-based science curriculum could be the most effective factor in preparing students for their upcoming roles as adults. This year-round program will enable 20-25 academically gifted high school students from across Bay Area, California state to participate in experimental "colloquies" that bridge the gap between the science taught in high school and the training provided in university science courses. In the colloquies, small teams of students will perform in-depth experiments in biomedical fields and they will discuss their investigations with other participants and experienced Ph.D/MD research scientists and science educators of NACEF.

NACEF brings this exciting new opportunity for the bright and underrepresented students interested in future professional careers (e.g. biology, medicine, science, ecology, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals etc.). The Biomedical Youth Science Program is a research experience enrichment program for gifted, underrepresented high school sophomores and juniors who have high academic and professional aspirations. Students from underserved communities traditionally have not pursued biomedical careers, though their neighborhoods are often hardest hit by health and environmental problems. By exposing these students to biotech experts on the biomedical science and assisting them into and through college to top graduate and professional schools, NACEF Youth Biomedical Science Program will foster future biomedical leaders.

NACEF is newly established non-profit organization. It was started at Stanford University in the spring of 1998 by a few Ph.D and MD students shared the belief that education is a critical requisite for Chinese community’s social and economic development. The mission of North America Chinese Educational Foundation is to pool its resources and expertise to improve Chinese community educational excellence. The activities of the North America Chinese Educational Foundation will build and strengthen educational programs for gifted, underrepresented students, instill in students an appreciation for their interrelated roles in communities, and facilitate the connection between Chinese community and mainstream societies.

We would like to emphasize that the program is need-based, both by design and by designation of our foundation sponsors. This is central to NACEF’s mission. We want to help underrepresented students who otherwise might not be exposed to quality higher education, or even the application process. Need will be one of most important criteria, along with academic performance, intelligence, curiosity, maturity, perceived potential, perceived benefit to the student, and the quality of the application. We expect many applications this year, so middle and upper income students will not be competitive in the pool. Most of our finalists will be minority students, but low-income Caucasians are welcome and encouraged to participate. Since intercultural education is also part of the curriculum, we attempt to create a good mix where this can take place.
