NACEF ENDORCE CHINA HOPE PROJECT

In January of 1998, North American Chinese Educational foundation (NACEF) along with Chinese Youth Development Foundation(CYDF) and Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Stanford (ACSSS) launched the Event: China Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America. CYDF’s China Project Hope is the most influential public event in China in the l990s. In the past ten years, Project Hope, a name known by almost every household in China and by most overseas Chinese, has received donations totaling over US$200 million. The fund raised has supported over 2 million Chinese primary school dropouts to return to school and has built over 7,000 hope schools in China. The Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America ‘98 & ‘99 has been joined by Chinese student associations in 33 universities like Harvard, MIT, Columbia, UC Berkeley, CalTech, and Toronto, and by a couple of Chinese community organizations like North American Chinese Network and Southwest China Association as chief-coorganizers and cosponsors. The objective of China Project Hope - Fund Raising in North America ‘98 & ‘99 is to motivate and unite organizations and individuals who are concerned about the educational development of China. This project seeks to sponsor the return to school of millions of children who were forced to drop out because of sheer poverty.

Fund Raising in North America is the first time China Project Hope has been publicly staged in North America. Envisioned and planned by Chinese students studying abroad at the most prestigious universities in United States, this event possesses great significance. It shows that the overseas Chinese’s wish to support their country by showing a united front. We want to help to actualize the plan to educate the Chinese youth and to further the technological advancement of China.

The first donor to the event is Professor Steve Chu, winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize for physics. Professor Chu made the donation after he heard of the event in early Jan. He said he would be happy to do something for the poor Chinese school dropouts. He urged more people to join our efforts. The Fund Raising in North America  has caught a great attention among public, so far the project have received funds which was used to support 320 dropouts back to schools.

Recent Achievements of NACEF

1/98   Launched China Project Hope-Fund Raising in North America ‘98 by the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars at Stanford. Formed the steering team of North American Chinese Educational Foundation(NACEF).

1/98  Received first donation of NACEF from Stanford Professor Steve Chu, the winner of 1997 Nobel Prize for Physics. Believing that education is the way to shape a community, he made the donation shortly after hearing of the event in early January. Professor Chu also urged more people to join the efforts to help these poor Chinese children.

1/98-3/98 Publicized NACEF in both North America and China. The event was covered by the major media like World Journal, Xingtao Daily, Overseas Chinese Daily, and SF Chinese Radio in the US and Canada and the People’s Daily and Xinghua News Agency of China. News about the event is also sent through the powerful internet to Chinese networks all over the world.

4/98 Established North American Chinese Educational Foundation (NACEF) in the Silicon Valley. This is a milestone of the Hope Project.

6/98 Sixteen students from Stanford and Berkeley attended the seventh annual Committee of 100 conference in Santa Clara. Project Hope was announced and promoted during the conference, and many famous Chinese signed to support Project Hope.

6/98 NACEF sent the first batch of $4,360 to the China Youth Development Foundation in Beijing.

10/98 NACEF sent the second batch of $8,600 to the China. It is for the sponsorship of 172 children in China’s flood areas. NACEF sent the donor information regarding the children they have supported.

3/99 NACEF received Non profit status.

4/99 NACEF organized a Project Picture Exhibit in four major US cities: San Francisco, Boston, New York and Los Angeles. A delegation of four,including the famous photographer Xie Hailong and the famous Document Writer Huang Chuanhi, was invited from China. Reality of poverish and the power of arts touched hundreds of people. We received many support from local major companies all over the United States. Also, NACEF became the focus of all major newspaper, TV stations and radio stations.

10/99 NACEF sent the third batch of $10,000 to the China. It is for the sponsorship of 200 children in China’s poor areas.

1/2000 NACEF donated $1,100,000 worth of textbooks to Tong-Ji Medical University for their teaching and research purpose
